Jakarta is Indonesia's capital city and one of the largest cities in the world with a population of 8,500,000 people. Jakarta is actually made up of 5 cities that all merge into one Jakarta - Central Jakarta, South Jakarta, West Jakarta, East Jakarta and North Jakarta.

The National Momument (Monumen Nasional) is also referred to as Monas. The National Monument was built by President Sukarno in the 1960s with the top plated with solid gold. The monument is surrounded by Merderka Square (Freedom park). There is an obversavation deck at the top of the monument with fantastic views over Jakarta.

 

Old Batavia (know known as Kota) is the old town in the centre of Jakarta. Old Batavia is lined with old Dutch Colonial buildings. At Old Batavia is the Wayang Museum which has on display examples of Javanese Wayang puppetry. Jalan Surabaya is located in Gemteng area close to the centre of Jakarta. This is a must visit place in Jakarta. The street is lined with small shops selling antiques, replica antiques, leather shoes and handbags, travel luggage as well as some really old vinyl records. One of the nicer areas of Jakarta to visit is Ancol in North Jakarta. So called Jakarta beach there is a fee for cars to enter so relatively quiet area. Many people from Jakarta and Java visit here on weekends so can get busy. This is a great place to take the children as have amusement parks, Sea World, waterslide park, a small 9 hole golf course, sailing boats and some great seafood restaurants. Although the locals have their children swim in the sea it is very polluted as Ancol is surrounded by industrial areas including the largest seaport in Indonesia. Bandar Djakarta Seafood Restaurant is located at Ancol in North Jakarta. Bandar Djakarta is a very busy restaurant serving a variety of fresh seafood. When you first walk into the restaurant you find a large number of fish tanks and buckets full of ice with a selection of seafood. You choose your food first then take your seat and wait for them to bring you your cooked meal. On busy nights you may have to wait in the reception area before being taken to your seat. From the Mercure Hotel in Ancol the restaurant is a few minutes by taxi or around a 15 minute walk.

Jimbaran Resto also located in Ancol has a great selection of seafood including huge tiger prawns, red snapper and lobster. Cooked just like the restaurants in Jimbaran Bay in Bali grilled with spices and served with rice and vegetables.

Shopping in Jakarta

 

Jakarta has some great shopping with various markets and modern shopping plazas selling a range of products from custom tailored suits and clothing, shoes, silk batik, home wares and arts and crafts.

 

For tailor made clothing check out Pasar Baru, meaning New Market, located in Central Jakarta which has a huge number of textile stalls and tailors who can measure you and produce tailored clothing within 24 hours. There is also a good selection of shoe shops in Pasar Baru selling known brands like Pierre Cardin, Salvatore Ferragamo and Cesare Pachotti.

 

Jakarta also has some massive, modern Shopping Malls with designer and brand name stores selling products much cheaper than in Europe or the US. Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia are located in Central Jakarta Tanah Abang next to the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Also check out Plaza Senayan for tailors, textile stalls and shoe stores.

One of the best shopping districts is Tanah Abang, close to Jalan Jaksa in Central Jakarta. There is a good selection of textiles, local made clothing and handbags. The markets here are open from 9am till 4pm everyday.

Jakarta has a very busy nightlife with many quality nightclubs and bars playing modern international and Indonesian music. Tanamur, located in Central Jakarta on Jln Tanah Abang Timur No 14, is still one of the busiest night clubs in Jakarta. It's been running sine the 70's and still attracts  locals and expats with a mixed crowd of straight and gay.

CJ's is a very popular nightclub located in the Hotel Mulia in the Senayan area of Jakarta, close to the business district.

 

The Oasis Lounge is a popular late night venue for it's music and good food. Set in an old colonial building located on Jln Gunung Sahari Raya.

 

JJ's is located right next door to Tanamur with great music and food.

 

Tiga Puluh Night Club is located within the Le Meridien Hotel is south Jakarta. With live music every night and serves really good food.

There are many bars popular with expats and budget travelers along Jalan Jaksa in Central Jakarta. Many of these are open 24 hours. www.jalanjaksa.com

 

Jakarta also has a fairly active gay scene. For some gay bars check out Apollo Bar and Lounge in the Bellagio Boutique Mall and also Heaven (on Fri and Sat night) located in the City Walk Square on Jl. Darmawangsa IX in South Jakarta.

 

Cinema / Movies in Jakarta

 

If you are looking to get out of the heat, into some air-conditioned comfort to watch one of the latest release movies then you cannot go past Blitzmegaplaza located on the 6th floor of the Pacific Place Mall in the Sudirman Central Business district. For 250,000Rp (US$22) you and your partner can share a synthetic rattan lazy beach bed with freshly laundered blankets and lay back and enjoy the movie.

New Years Eve in Jakarta

The best place to celebrate New Years Eve in Jakarta is at the Grand Hyatt Jakarta which has one of the best views over the city, a great place to view the fireworks. The Burgundy Bar at the Grand Hyatt looks over the Selemat Datang Monument where hundreds of thousands of people come to watch the fireworks. The Selamat Datang Monument is located in Central Jakarta Tanah Abang area in from of the Grand Hyatt Hotel and Mandarin Orient Hotel. The round about has millions of people travel through it everyday. The monument was built by President Sukarno in 1962 as part of Jakarta's beautification project. Getting there and away

Jakarta's International and domestic airport is called Soekarno-Hatta International airport.

A departure fee is payable at the airport for domestic flights of 35,000Rp and for international flights 150,000Rp.

Starbucks at International Terminal 2 has a WiFi wireless internet hotspot. The new Terminal 3 where Mandala airline depart and arrive from currently have 2 executive lounges which cost 50,000Rp to enter which includes a free Starbucks coffee and free WiFi internet hotspot though they are unreliable often disconnecting.

There is a city shuttle bus running from Soekarno-Hatta airport Terminal 1 and 2 to the centre of Jakarta run by Damri buses. This bus also goes to Gambir train station. Price is 20,000Rp and takes around 1 hour.

A taxi from Soekarno-Hatta airport to the cnetre of Jakarta will cost around 90,000Rp - 120,000Rp depending on the time of day and traffic conditions. There are taxi ranks out the front with Blue Bird Taxis or Borobudur Taxis (also blue in colour). These are the cheapest taxi though you'll have to queue. There are other taxi counters inside the terminal through they will charge more. They will quote up to 250,000Rp for the transfer though you can bargain them down to 150,000Rp. This is worth it as they will take you straight to a taxi to save you the wait in the taxi queue.

If you would like to prearrange a car transfer from the airport to your hotel you can contact Jakarta Airport Transfer. They charge US$35 and greet you at the airport terminal and take you to the car waiting. Larger vehicles can be arranged.
