Places of Interest in Bali

Other Indonesian locations

The east coast of Bali is dominated with Gunung Agung (3142m) and Gunung Batur, with a beautiful coastline with numerous spots for great snorkeling and scuba diving. Gunung Batur has an impressive landscape with Danau Batur at the base of the volcano. Towns to stay on the east coast of Bali include Padangbai (which has the ferry port to Lombok) Candidasa and Amed.

Gunung Agung Bali

Gunung Agung

The main area with loads of accommodation is Candidasa though there are hotels and resorts all along the east coast of Bali.

At Padang Bai on the east coast of Bali there is a ferry port with ferries going to Lombok and the Gili Islands.

One of the best places for snorkeling and scuba diving is Amed, which is a 10km stretch of white sandy beachs, located north of Candidasa. See below for more information about snorkeling and scuba diving. There are no ATMs in Amed though there are money changers.

Lipah Beach (Selang)

Nusa Penida and Nusa lembongan

Exchange rates

There are plenty of money changers in Padangbai which offer comparable rates to what you will find in Kuta.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

There are too many locations to list here for snorkeling and scuba diving along the east coast of Bali.

The best spots are just off Candidasa as well as at Blue Lagoon, 11km south of Candidasa, close to Padang Bai, also around Amed.

Around Amed you will find some awesome dive spots including 2 WWII ships that were sunk off the coast. 30 minutes from Amed is Tulamben village which has off it's coast the wreck of the USS Liberty.

15 minutes by speedboat off the coast from either Candidasa or Padang Bai are a group of small islands which have some excellent dive and snorkeling spots. Some of the larger islands are called Gili Tepekong, Gili Mimang, Gili Biaha and Gili Selang. There are good soft coral and the reef drops off dramatically not far from the islands with some good wall diving with chances of seeing schools of baracuda and turtles. Some of the islands have under water caves to explore.

Restaurants in Candidasa

There is a good selection of restaurants to choose from apart from those already found in the hotels. A number of the restaurants also offer a nightly movie to watch while enjoying the food and drinks.

There are a number of good cafes like Candidasa Cafe, Cafe Wayan and Malibu Cafe serving traditional Indonesian food and a selection of international food including Aritka's serving good Indian restaurant, Italian at Garpu Restaurant and Queen's Bar and Asian seafood at Kedai Restaurant.

Lotus Seaview Restaurant serves great Asian cuisine including Indonesian, Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese and Malaysian. Located at the entrance to Candidasa.
