Places of Interest in Java

Other Indonesian locations

Bandung, located in West Java, is Indonesia's 3rd largest city with a population of over 7 million people. Bandung is 187km southeast of Jakarta.

Bandung is located at 768m above sea level within the Priangan highlands. The climate here has an average temperature of 22.5 degrees Celsius.

North of Bandung is the crater of Tangkubanperahu volcano which exploded thousands of years ago. Around this area are some great waterfalls, hot springs and panoramic vantage points.

The highway between Bandung and Cirebon was originally built between 1808 and 1810 with a great loss of life. The highway snakes between mountain peaks and valleys.

40km east of Bandung is the small mountain village Sumedang. Here you'll find the Prabu Geusan Ulun Museum which has items displayed from the Parahyangan Kingdom which ruled for a thousand years around this area. On display is the original gold crown and jewelry worn by the rulers dating back to 1578. There are also several keris daggers made from gold and the sheaths encrusted with diamonds.

Jeans Street Bandung

In Bandung there are plenty of places to buy good quality fabrics and clothing though the most interesting of these is Jl. Cihampelas which is known as Jeans street because of the many shops selling cheap denim jeans. You can still pick up a pair for around 100,000Rp (US$10) but these jeans are very much Indonesian style and Indonesian quality. Not many large sizes available for your average Westerner. These factory outlets also sell a great range of T-Shirts with very bizarre sayings written on them and plenty of imitation brand name t-shirts.

Jalan Cihampelas Jean Street Bandung

One of the most interesting things about Jalan Cihampelas (Jean Street) are the ornaments that adorn the shop fronts. Most of the shops have large models of superheroes and movie stars including Spiderman, Superman, Spiderwoman and Rambo. See more information and photos of Jalan Cihampelas (Jean Street Bandung)

Rambo Jeans Jalan Cihampelas Bandung

Another good place to visit for clothing, fabrics as well as jewelry, souvenirs and fruit and vegetable is the Pasar Baru (New Market) which has 7 levels of shopping.

Bandung Zoo

The Bandung Zoo is a typical Indonesian zoo with most of the animals in concrete enclosures but the grounds and animal closures are kept in clean conditions unlike most Indonesian zoos. All the animals seem to be in good health.  Located on Jl. Taman Sari it has on display 2 Sumatran tigers, 2 Bengal tigers and 4 Sumatran Elephants, 3 Sumatra Orangutan as well as a Komodo Dragon, a good selection of birds and reptiles.  It is opened everyday from 7am - 5pm with entry fee 15000Rp. There are lots of plants and trees throughout the grounds of the zoo and lots of mosquitoes so take along some mosquito repellent. See our video of the Orangutan at Bandung Zoo.
